ChatGPT’s “Projects” feature is now free!

OpenAI has officially made the “Projects” feature available to free ChatGPT users. This tool allows organizing conversations into folders, uploading files, and personalizing AI responses with custom settings.

Previously available only to paid subscribers, the feature is now part of the free version. However, “Projects” is more than just a simple folder system — it lets users create special instructions and limit which files or data the AI can access.

At the same time, OpenAI updated file upload limits:

  • Free users — 5 files,
  • Plus subscribers — 25 files,
  • Pro subscribers — 40 files.

Users can also personalize their workspace with custom colors and icons.

This approach follows OpenAI’s strategy of gradually opening premium features to everyone. For example, ChatGPT Voice and Deep Research were first offered to subscribers and later rolled out to all users. Still, some limitations remain in the free plan. For instance, while the GPT-5 model is available to all, free users face stricter daily limits.

Currently, the “Projects” feature works on the web version and Android app, with iOS support expected in the coming days.
